Vitamin cuirl – The Benefits Of Gathering

Is the secret to happiness and good health as simple as getting together?

With mobile devices constantly bombarding us with alerts, news, conversations, photographs, information… should the advice from the doctor of ‘an apple a day’ actually be the opposite: to walk away from our mobiles and take some time out to live life a little more? You know…in real life.

It is well documented that lower levels of anxiety and depression are linked with greater ‘real world’ connections with others, along with a better level of self-esteem.

Research from William Chopik, associate professor of psychology Michigan State University found that friendship become increasingly important to one’s happiness and health across the lifespan.

In a pair of studies involving nearly 280,000 people, Chopnik say, “Keeping a few really good friends around can make a world of difference for our health and well-being. So it’s smart to invest in the friendships that make you happiest.”

As you might expect, an underinvestment in relationships away from the digital sphere often lead to loneliness, isolation and a decline in mental (and physical) wellbeing. The journal Psychoneuroendocrinology recently completed a study on how socializing may affect our health. Their research found that extroverts have the highest level of immune-system functioning.

"Keeping a few really good friends around can make a world of difference for our health and well-being. So it’s smart to invest in the friendships that make you happiest."

This leads to one simple conclusion: the only real way to ‘thrive at being alive’ is to connect, in real life, with others.

Here at cuirl we want to help and support you in switching off. By which we really mean switching on: switching on to the idea of laughter; switching on to the idea of entertaining; switching on to the idea of experimenting with cocktails; and switching on to the idea of cuirl- seeing people in real life.

Join us on this journey and take a look at our article ‘Don’t Forget Your Paintbrush – Our Guide to Productive Gatherings’ or our ‘Handy Cocktail Hacks’ for stress free ways to gather. Stay tuned for lots more ways to entertain better, more often, and in turn improve our own health and wellbeing.
